  1. 1909-1986. US clarinetist, nicknamed `the
  2. King of Swing' for the new jazz idiom he
  3. introduced (with arranger Fletcher
  4. Henderson). Leader of his own swing band from
  5. 1934, he is celebrated for numbers such as
  6. `Blue Skies' and `Avalon'. In 1955 he
  7. organized a new band and continued touring
  8. with it throughout the world up until his
  9. death. Goodman was also successful as a
  10. classical clarinetist; Bartok's Contrasts
  11. 1939 and Copland's Clarinet Concerto 1950
  12. were among the pieces written for him. It was
  13. he who introduced jazz to New York's Carnegie
  14. Hall in 1938.
